Sadie

At Dillard Dental Services, we believe you can look forward to your dental visits, and we believe we’ve created a dental experience that is relaxing and stress-free. Everyone’s favorite fuzzy pooch, our sweet girl Sadie, leads on this task. Sadie is a loving and gentle comfort dog who has joined our team to help make your visit truly enjoyable. When Sadie greets you with her warm brown eyes, wiggling her little nubbin tail, you will immediately understand how she helps calm the anxiety so many people feel when visiting the dentist.

Meet Sadie

Sadie is the pup of an Australian Shepherd and a toy Poodle, or “Aussiedoodle.” She has inherited the best traits of these two breeds, making her very intelligent, friendly, gentle, non-shedding, and hypoallergenic. Standing just 9 inches tall and weighing 14 pounds, she is often mistaken for a puppy, but this “big girl” was born in 2019 and has been working her magic in our office since 2021. Her size and personality have made her a favorite team member specializing in spreading smiles and putting the most nervous patients at ease.

Not a Dog Person? No Worries…

We understand that dogs aren’t for everyone, and Sadie does too. Sadie follows Dr. Dillard like her little shadow. She will share her love if you need her, but she won’t approach you unless you invite her to. She doesn’t jump up or get under your feet. Instead, she politely sits next to your chair for a moment to see if you need her. Then, she curls up in her favorite chair in the corner and enjoys a nap while we work.

If you are uncomfortable with her presence, that is not a problem. We can easily keep her out of the room where you are being treated; just let one of our team members know.

More than Just Comfort

After seeing Sadie’s first encounter with a patient and hundreds of times since, I have come to realize that the difference she makes is much bigger than just the comfort, she provides in the moment. Many people struggle with fear and anxiety to the extent that it prevents them from seeking dental care. Due to this overwhelming fear, they avoid receiving preventive care or seeking help with smaller problems in their early stages. Sometimes, suffering through terrible pain and delay until the pain outweighs their fear before they can come in for help. Their visit to our office can be even more traumatic than they expect because our brains perceive pain at a much greater magnitude during mental and emotional stress.

Unfortunately, their delay causes our treatment options to be limited to those that are typically more expensive, and often, we have no other choice but to remove the painful teeth. This experience adds to their ongoing fear, and the undesirable outcome causes them to return to their avoidance of dental care. I have seen this cycle repeat itself over and over until they lose multiple teeth and more unnecessary pain.

For many, Sadie’s presence reduces their anxiety and lowers their stress. She is especially helpful for those who are coping with social anxiety in addition to their dental anxiety. Knowing that she will be here when they return helps them take the steps they need to stop the cycle of pain – fear – emergency– avoidance. Sadie does more than provide comfort; she improves the health of our patients and helps them maintain it.

How Sadie helps our patients:

  • Sits beside you or in your lap and provides comfort during treatments.
  • Reduces anxiety with her calm and friendly demeanor.
  • Provides a much-needed distraction with a snuggle or a belly rub.

What our Patients say about Sadie

How Sadie Became Part of Our Team

Bringing a dog to work with me was never the plan. Sadie first joined my family on Christmas morning in 2020. She was a gift for my oldest son; we were hoping she would help lower his anxiety instead of using medication at a young age. She answered our prayers; in just a few short weeks, his anxiety had nearly vanished with her companionship and tender affection.

It didn’t occur to me that she would have the same effect on our patients, but I soon discovered this by accident. Sadie and I were coming home from a visit to her veterinarian one Saturday afternoon when I received an emergency call from one of our patients, Hannah. She was in terrible pain, so I arranged to see her before taking Sadie home. Hannah had a long history of traumatic dental experiences, and it was typical for her to be visibly shaken or in tears when she came to the office. I knew from our phone call that this time was no different.

Sadie and I greeted Hannah at the office door. I hoped Sadie might ease her tension, but I never expected what happened next. In just a few moments, Sadie completely dissolves Hannah’s fear. Her face softened, her shoulders relaxed, and the tension in her rigid stance disappeared as she knelt to pet her. She looks up at me with a big smile. I had never seen her beautiful smile before. I know I am finally meeting the same Hannah that the rest of the world knows.

Sadie followed us back into a treatment room, and Hannah invited her to sit on her lap while I examined her. I was able to identify the problem she was having and help resolve her pain more quickly because of Sadie’s calming effect.

My mind was flooded with a long list of other patients I thought would respond the same way Hannah had to Sadie’s presence. Over the next several weeks, I brought Sadie along with me, especially when patients with high dental anxiety were scheduled. Time after time, we watched Sadie work her magic, and it was immediately clear that we needed her. Our patients needed her, not on occasion but every day. She’s been a part of our team ever since, and I don’t know how we could have done it without her.
