Using implant-supported dentures for better fit and functionality

Missing teeth can make it difficult to speak clearly and eat as efficiently as before. When faced with tooth loss, it is important that you speak with an experienced dental provider to discuss your options for treatment. While full dentures may be an excellent solution for many patients, they can be challenging to maintain and may be unreliable when in the smile. This is why Dr. Leslie Dillard and her team at Dillard Dental Services may recommend a treatment known as implant-support dentures, which may also be referred to as implant-retained dentures. Let’s consider this option to help you determine if it’s suitable for you!

What are implant-supported dentures?

Implant-supported dentures are described as a solution for patients missing all the teeth in the dental arch who are unhappy with or want to avoid more traditional full dentures. Full dentures are fabricated from quality acrylic materials and include both false teeth and gum tissues. They are held in place with either natural suction or denture adhesives. However, because of this, they may not fit and function properly. This is when our team may recommend alternative options, such as implant-supported dentures.

How do implant-retained dentures work?

Implant-supported dentures are a more conservative type of full denture made from quality acrylics. Instead of using natural suction or denture adhesives, however, this restoration uses anywhere from four to six dental implants along the dental arch to anchor the denture in place. This allows the dentures to fit and perform at their best, as they will not shift or fall out. Our patients have improved confidence when switching from traditional to implant-supported dentures.

Are implant-supported dentures and snap-on dentures the same?

Snap-on dentures are made to fit over the natural teeth and fill spaces where teeth are missing. They cannot be used to replace all the teeth in the arch. They are removable, while implant-supported dentures are not.

How do I determine if I am a good candidate for these implant-supported dentures?

The best candidates for this type of denture are patients with sufficient jawbone structure to keep them in place. This can be determined with dental x-rays to look at the bone and plan the placement of the implants along the arch.
